Our board-certified plastic surgeon, Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso, in Miami, FL can add an aesthetically pleasing contour to your face as an out-patient procedure, and you should be able to return to work and other normal activities within a week. Our friendly patient advisors can help you schedule a private consultation with Dr. LaGrasso at your earliest convenience.

What types of facial Implants do you offer?

Cheek Implants

Strong cheekbones give an individual a defined facial profile, which many find appealing and youthful looking. Cheek augmentation places implants or fillers within the mid-face to correct the loss of volume that occurs with weight loss, aging or gravity. Cheek augmentation surgery alone may take years off the face and also helps to decrease the visible effects of laugh lines, wrinkles, loose jowls and a sagging jaw line. There are many options to consider with cheek augmentation, each with an outcome that can provide plumpness to the cheeks, and establish a rejuvenated facial appearance.

Chin Implants

Chin augmentation is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the contours of the chin while strengthening the jaw line. It can be performed to supplement a nose procedure (such as rhinoplasty) to balance and improve the contours of the entire face. Chin implants are usually made of silicone and inserted within a chin pocket to add a stronger jaw line. There are also methods when an autologous approach can be taken using bone from the rib or pelvic area and made to serve as an implant. Synthetic implants come in different sizes and shapes that can be matched to the patient’s preferences and aesthetic goals.

Lip Implants

Thin, flat lips: Some of us have very thin lips with no definition. This may be due to genetics, aging or smoking. Tissue degrades as we age and definition is lost over the years. Most of us want more defined, fuller lips which are smooth, wrinkle-free and youthful, which can be achieved with implants.

Am I A Good Candidate For Facial Implants?

Before considering any of our facial implant options at Jeffrey LaGrasso M.D., patients should be in good overall health. Other factors that will make you a good candidate for facial implants will depend on the area of the face you wish to treat.

Cheek Implants

The best patients for cheek implants are women and men who may:

  • Desire fuller cheeks
  • Have age-related volume loss in their cheeks
  • Have naturally flat or hollow cheeks
  • Have lost a large amount of weight, leading to deflated cheeks
  • Have an imbalance in their mid-face caused by a congenital defect, a physical condition, or an accident

Chin Implants

If you are unhappy with the size of your chin and do not like the undefined profile it creates, chin implants can improve the lower area of your face.

Lip Implants

Lip implants can help give you more voluminous lips and a shapelier mouth. Ideal candidates for lower and/or upper lip augmentation:

  • Have thin lips naturally or have lost lip volume with age
  • Have uneven or asymmetrical lips
  • Want to improve the overall appearance of your face

What happens during facial implant surgery?

The surgical technique follows a similar pattern for all facial plastic surgery. Dr. LaGrasso will make a small incision near where the implant will be placed, either in a crease or inside the mouth at the gum/lip junction. Then a pocket is made in the facial tissue, the implant inserted, and the incision is stitched. The process generally takes 1 – 2 hours, usually with general anesthesia. The incision is bandaged or taped, and stitches are removed in 5 – 10 days (sutures placed inside the mouth will dissolve in a similar period of time). Sometimes facial implants are inserted at the same time as a facelift, nose surgery, or eyelid lift procedure is performed.

Other COnsiderations for facial implants

  • As with any surgical procedure, infection may occur in the incision site
  • If the infection persists, the implant may have to be removed and replaced
  • Shifting of the implant is another possibility, and a second procedure might be necessary to reposition the implant
  • You will experience post-operative bruising and swelling with mild to moderate discomfort for 1 – 2 days
  • Strenuous activity and rough contact near the implant area must be avoided for 4 – 6 weeks

Facial Implant FAQs

How is lip augmentation with lip implants performed?

The surgery is not at all complex nor does it take a substantial amount of time to perform. You re injected with local shots of Lidocaine for pain relief and epinephrine, a vasoconstrictor, to restrict the amount of bleeding a bruising. After making the necessary 4 incisions at each corner of the mouth, the surgeon inserts the implant using either an implant pre-threaded on trocar or using a pair of alligator forceps. After insertion, the surgeon cuts the implant to the size best for the patient’s individual lip and trims the ends of the implant if necessary. The incision areas are then sutured with a thin, either dissolving or non-dissolving suture material, then you are cleaned up.

Is facial implant surgery painful?

Of course, your plastic surgeon will implement anesthesia before making incisions in your face, and you will feel nothing during the procedures. You will feel a mild to moderate discomfort for 1 – 2 days.
